Random Rants (29-31 August 2008)

Sclumberger Technology Day 2008 - The 2nd Day

Today is the second day for Sclumberger (pronounced as Slum-ber-jay) Technology Day in UTM, also the last day of it. I woke up really early this morning as I wanted to update my blog post, which took me around an hour to update before going to DSI. While I was updating my blog post, dark clouds began to form in the sky and it eventually started to rain. Man, rained again. It surely rained a lot these days here in Johor. Then, I checked out my camera, crap, it failed to function properly. Oh man, it happened while I really needed it the most. So troublesome.

I cycled there with an umbrella on my left hand. Well, it was kind of laughable actually, man, spare me. Cut that out. Once I reached DSI, it was already 8.35am. Well, I saw Puan Fauziah, Kak Amy and Jennie were already there at the information counter. Crap, I was late by 5 minutes. I quickly apologised for being late and much to my relief, Puan Fauziah accepted promptly. I quickly looked around for for whatever I could help out there and found myself some random jobs such as cutting the lucky number for the program booklet and getting some hippo-shaped piggy banks ready. Then, I went off to have my breakfast. Well, the bihun was not that good, I just ate a bit before I dumped it. Yeah, it might be a bit wasteful but the thing was that it did not suit my taste at all. Putting that aside, I had my breakfast with some Sclumberger stuffs and PKK stuff. It was really an enjoyable moment.

After helping out at the information booth for around half an hour, I excused myself to go into the hall to visit the 10 booths there. This time, I started from WesternGeco booth. I learned that this department is responsible to do some seismic test to check if the proposed area have resources or not. Then, the Drilling & Management department would do some drilling process to check up the place and confirm the presence of the resources. And so as for the other departments. All these departments do not necessarily need specialised people in their department, but all they need are just engineers (regardless of which field) as Schlumberger would train and shape them into the competent engineers for the each departments.

The whole day was really a great moment. Time really flies by when we are doing the things that we enjoy. The only things that I regretted were that I did not make full use of the time there to go ask more technical questions (due to my lack of study XD) and my camera broke down at the moment I really needed it the most. It's all fate, wasn't it?

Anyway, I managed to borrow Razlan's Sony Erickson's mobile phone to take some pictures. Here they are:
I received my volunteer certificate from Mr. Yang from Schlumberger team

Some random rants:
Well, some of the volunteer team had their test during the Sclumberger Technology Day 2008, so it was like, well, quite tough for them as they would be dead tired by the time they reach their hostel and they might just fall asleep right away before they evet have the chance to study.

Anyway, the
commitment from volunteer team had gotten good feedback from Schlumberger Team and from the admin of UTM. This was such a great news for us. It really made us feel like every bits of our efforts were really worthful. Thanks a bunch, Schlumberger team and the volunteers team.

Sclumberger Technology Day 2008 - The 1st Day

I got up really early today. Yeah, I could hardly wait for today to come. Yes, it was Schlumberger Technology Day 2008, collaboration with Pusat Kaunseling dan Kerjaya (PKK) of Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM). Surely it would be a real eye-opener for me to know more about oil and gas industry's giant company, Sclumberger.

When I reached DSI, I was the first one to reach there actually. So, while waiting for others, I walked around and took some pictures. Here they are:

The main entrance

The information counter

Well, things were quite rushing this morning, I was actually having my breakfast at the dining hall, then suddenly someone asked for my penknife, so I went out of the dining hall to get the penknife for her. Then, Jennie asked me to arrange some chairs for students to sit in the VVIP room during career talks, which would take place there from 9.30am to 1.30pm. So, I ended up helping others before I could even finish up my breakfast. Then, everything settled, only then I could go to resume my breakfast. Well, that was not much of a problem actually.

There were 4 career talks in this morning, i.e.
  1. Schlumberger Business Outlook by Sharad Behal, the Vice President & General Manager, Shlumberger Brunei, Malaysia & Philippines.
  2. Technology in Schlumberger by Greg Nyein, the Account Manager, Schlumberger Brunei, Malaysia & Philippines.
  3. Career Opportunities in Schlumberger by Nora Abu Zarin, the Recreuiting Manager, Schlumberger Brunei, Malaysia & Philippines.
  4. Greeting Sessions by UTM Alumni (Darren Chew, Completions Project Engineer, Schlumberger Brunei, Malaysia & Philippines; Noor Rohaellizza, Reservoir Engineer, Schlumberger Brunei, Malaysia & Philippines.
I started my day with helping out at the information booth. We arranged the program booklet nicely there, helped to explain this program to the students who entered the hall, gave them a program booklet each upon their visit to the information counter, invited them to go for the career talk sessions, answered all both expected and unexpected questions...

After helping out in the information booth, I went for the second and third career talk. Before entering the VVIP room, Puan Fauziah, the Recruiting Assistant, Schlumberger Brunei, Malaysia & Philippines suddenly approached me and asked if I had seen Melissa, the emcee for the career talks. I opened the VVIP room a bit and searched for Melissa, but I couldn't find her. Then, I saw Woon Chan sitting behind and made some signal to her to tell her to come out. After she came out, she also didn't know where Melissa was at the moment. We then searched around the foyer and still couldn't find Melissa. Puan Fauziah then assigned me to be the temporary emcee for the event. Gosh, it was quite sudden. But it could be a good training for me. So, I accepted the challenge. When I went into the front, Mr Sharad was still delivering his speech his very last bit of talk. When his talk was finally over, it was time for him to give away a prize for someone who could answer his question, that is how many tongs of petroleum that can be produced daily. Well, I have forgotten the asnwer, sadly.

Later, it was a talk given by Mr Greg Nyien. His talk was really a splendid one as he is a really given speaker. He touched mostly on the technologies used in enhancing the production line. Later, the third speaker was Puan Nora. Well, it really widened my view on this oil and gas field. Yes, it's true that the job there on the platform is harsh, but, you'll really get what you are really deserved for. I have also learnt that working in Sclumberger does not mean that you'll stay in one department from the day you start your career there until you retire. Instead, you'll be different departments from time to time.

After the talks, I went back to the information counter to carry out my duty. It was quite an interesting job. You get all the chance to explain details to everyone who visit the booth. Yes, for sure that you might get a killer question once in a blue moon. This really good chance to polish up my conversation skill. For sure, I really went for it and tried my very best. At the counter, I met Kak Amy from Schlumberger team. She is a really nice person. She chatted about her life there in Sclumberger. It was a really good story.

As for the afternoon session, we had the opening ceremony by Timbalan Naib Canselor (TNC) UTM. Oh, those big shots really took their time to reach the destination. Never mind. The opening ceremony was, well, quite ok. Nothing much to be commented on.

After the opening ceremony was over, the VIPs and the crowds began to gather around the ten booths inside the hall. These 10 booths were:
  1. QHSE
  2. Schlumberger Information Solutions
  3. Data & Consulting Services
  4. Integrated Project Management
  5. Completions
  6. Well Services
  7. Well Testing Services
  8. Wireline
  9. Drilling & Measurement
  10. WesternGeco

Later at 8pm, we had our dinner at the UTM's lake side. The food was especially from KL! Yes, Schlumberger managed to get food caterer from KL as they were not quite satisfied with the food caterer here in Johor. The food was delicious, thumbs up!

Sclumberger Technology Day 2008 - The day before

It rained a bit. I was stuck in the library. Feeling anxious, I glanced at my watch, it was 2.50pm. Oh, it's almost time for the Sclumberger Technology Day's team to meet up with us, the volunteers for this important day. I walked slowly to Dewan Sultan Iskandar (DSI) while looking at the sky. It was surely quite a bad day. It had been raining the whole afternoon.

When I reached DSI, gosh, there was no one there. I waited for 10 minutes, but still no signs of anyone coming. I started feeling suspicious, something was not right here, I thought. So, I messaged Jennie and only then found out that Kak Nik had postponed this meeting to 3.30pm due to the rain. Feeling a bit disappointed, I went back to the library, also known as Perpustakaan Sultanah Zanariah (PSZ).

I grabbed a July's Reader Digest and started my reading. I read something awesome about Beijing's new Olympic Stadium, also known as Bird Nest. It was regarded as one of the greatest modern design buildings. The building is unique for having so many crisscrossing steel beams wound in the shape of a giant basket. It could hold up to 91,000 people. The designers are two Swiss architects, Jacques Herzog and Pierre de Meuron; and a Chinese artist Ai WeiWei. The building is using the latest technology, including the usage of Ethlene Tetrafluoroethylene (ETFE). This polymer is a trasnparent plastic, related to Teflon. Some of the advantages of choosing this material is that it is just 1% of the weight of glass; transmits more light; a better insulator; costs less; recyclable; self-cleaning; tougher; and quite a long life-span (approximately 50 years).

After reading the article, I went back to DSI once again and found that there were already four people, including Jennie, Ivy, Tebbie and Hui Xian there. Later I found out that the Sclumberger team were just checking out from Pulai Spring and that would take half an hour for them to reach UTM. Oh well, we had to wait again.

Razlan invited me to join him scrolling around the ten booths. Yeah, I agreed quickly. It was damn boring while waiting. The booths were splendidly arranged. There was a TV at each booth for displaying purposes. The following pictures were taken using Razlan's handset.

View from the main entrance

On the stage

While waiting, Hock Ming and Jennie went out to find a box to serve as a lucky draw box. Then, we wrapped it up with a really bright orange colour paper. Oh, never mind about the colour, the problem is that how to make a hole in the top part of the box so that hand could go in to draw out lucky numbers. Luckily, I brought along a small scissors with me. It was really a hectic job, such a small scissors was not so sufficient, it was really painful while cutting the hole.

while others were busy distributing packages according to their booth

Just as we were keeping ourselves busy, the Sclumberger team's bus finally arrived in font of DSI. Puan Fauziah, the Schlumberger's HR for South East Asia, stepped in DSI's foyer and asked for our help to unload the packages from the bus. After unloading the packages, we put them at their own booth accordingly. That took around twenty minutes. Then, we had a short briefing on what we should do on the actual day. Each of us received a bag of prizes, including a dark blue T-shirt, a light blue T-shirt, a plush, programme book and a paper bag.

Before we left, we did some numbering thing. Each and everyone of us numbered the program booklet. It was such a repetitious job. After finish numbering the booklet, I counted it back. Eh, how come the number was lest than it suppose to be? I rechecked the booklet's numbers twice. Gosh, I had rewritten the 979 twice. Sheesh, it was such a waste of time, but never mind.

Finally, our job was over. Each of us were so exhausted by that time. Without muchwasting time, we went back to our own college. On my way back, I dropped by Cengal Cafe to to buy some dinner. While I was about to make my leave, I saw Jagathiswaran, my coursemate. We chatted a bit on EPL before I went back to grab my shower.

Random Rants (24 August 2008)

This morning, I went for my degree++, “How to Get Yourself Employed”. The event starts at 8.30am. It was still so early, still so sleepy. Still so sad about the mock interview which was held last night, I rode my bicycle to my faculty. Well, to be frank, I was really blank during the mock interview, words seemed hard to be form from my mouth that night, and even worse, I misused the wrong phrase and it really made a huge damage on my speech. But, never mind that, I told myself, after all, it was just a mock interview which was meant to be a practice.

The first two hours speech was delivered by Mr Zubil Bahak, my Thermo-Fluid lecture, on “A Good First Impression”. His speech was superb. Not only had he entertained us with all his humorous jokes, but he also conveyed his messages very effectively. I had learnt important aspects on effective way of verbal, body languages and speech. Besides, I had also learnt a few powerful words that spiced up my vocabulary and would be a big helping hand in interview. All those dos and don’ts during an interview were really a great help during any interview.

After a 20 minutes break, Mr Razali Sulaiman delivered the second part of the speech on “Resume and Cover Letter”. Well, his speech is quite ok, but not as interesting as the previous presenter. I learnt how big companies make quite selection for interviewees, which is through a three-staged culling process. The first stage culling process kills off 50% - 70% of the candidates by a quick glance of any misspellings, wrong employers’ names, not following instructions, not sending on time and non-professional looking resumes. As for the second stage, only more outstanding resumes can pass through it. This includes formatting that makes the resumes more tidy and outstanding. As for the last stage, it mostly refer to the how well the details in the resumes relate to the job applied.

*************************************************************************************

Later on, I had been trying out my CELCOM Broadband in my hostel, but the result was always negative. Hence I could not even go online today. Even if I could connect to the internet, it would only last for a few seconds before dying out. Oh man, it was so damn boring without internet.

*************************************************************************************

Then, I received a sms from Jennie, inviting me to watch Beijing Olympics’ closing ceremony. Without much hesitation, I agreed instantly. She picked me up and another friend of mine, Yun Fatt to Taman U. Our luck was quite bad, it rained a bit. So, we moved from tables to tables quite a number of times. A few minutes later, more friends came and joined us watching the closing ceremony. The closing ceremony was quite splendidly carried out. It started off with speeches by Beijing Olympics’ Head and the International Olympics’ Head. Then, a series of entertainment were dished out, including dazzling grand fireworks, human pyramid, Hong Kong pop singers (including Jacky Chan and Wong Lee Hom) singing, some performance from the next Olympics powerhouse, England, including some dances and David Beckham stood on the top of a double-decker bus while waving to the spectators. The closing ceremony ended with a series of fantastic flamboyant fireworks.Oh, How I wish I were there in the stadium to watch it.

A tiring but meaningful day

"You think you can reach the bunting holders?"

"Oh no, I ain't that tall.
"

"But, there are 100 buntings to be hanged up. Maybe we should ask Pak Guard some tangga."

"lol, but you think we could borrow from them meh?"

"Maybe la... Who knows?"

Oh well, that was our conversation this morning before hanging up 100 buntings for Schlumberger Career Fair around UTM. The event would take place at Dewan Sultan Iskandar (DSI) on 27 & 28 August 2008.

I woke up early this morning. It was still so sleepy, oh gosh, have to wake up so early. After all, now is my rare chance to sleep as much as I wish. It was my semester break after all. But I had promised others that I would help out for hanging buntings. Ok, get up, sleepy head, I told myself.

This morning Jennie sent me a message and picked me up from my college. Still yawning, I got up her car. We gathered at PKK (Pusat Kaunseling dan Kerjaya). Oh crap, there were only 5 of us available this morning to hang those 100 buntings. It would take up a long time for sure, I told myself.

After some job distribution, we left to the main gate to start hanging up the buntings.
*UTM's main gate (picture was taken during convocation, 19th August 2009 around 6.30pm)

We start off by taking off the convo's buntings and only then we hanged up ours. Well, we climbed up the bunting hangers, yes, we really heroically climbed it. Haha.

Now, here comes the funny part. First, we were warned by some technicians about our safety as we were climbing up the bunting hangers without any ladder. Well, we just kind of ignoring them and continued our job. After hanging around 20 buntings, a Pak Guard (security) stopped us and questioned us on whether we had our permission to take down the convo's buntings and to hang up Schlumberger's buntings. Oh crap, Pak Guard again. They have always been hated by most students here. Oh well, after all, they are just doing their job. This time, Jennie represented us all to be questioned. XD Luckily, it wasn't me.

After 1o minutes, she came out and clarified that we could hang up the buntings. Just that Pak Guard want to make sure that we count those buntings that we had taken down. Of course, no worries, Pak Guard.

Then, again, we started again our laborious job. The five of us hanged up the buntings like crazy. Well, it was such a repetitious job, taking down the convo's buntings, climbing up the bunting hangers, hanging up Schlumberger's buntings, tying up the wires and then climbing down. Gosh, I never thought that it would be this tiring, just hanging buntings.

Around 11.30am, the sky seemed so dark, we took a break and promised to continued our job at 2.30pm. We parted and went off to take our meal at Pak Ali. I chose a piece of chicken, some vegie and a nescafe ice. It cost me 5 bucks. That's pretty expensive, I thought. But, never mind, this is just once in a while. We enjoyed our lunch and chitchatted a bit after it. There were 3 of us, me, Jennie and Hock Meng.

Then, we were off to PKK again and have a short break before starting our job again. During this time, Hock Meng and I met Kak Nurzima, a counselor there. She is one of our hardworking Mandarin Class student. We first chatted about mandarin language as she had some doubts. Later, without much, suddenly our topic changed to career stuffs. She really stressed out the importance of choosing a right career. She talked about why thousands of graduates can't get their jobs and what are we supposed to expect while working with Multi National Company (MNC). She stressed that graduates tend to be so snobbish as they are so choosy of their job and salaries. I was really moved, seriously.

After the rest, we started again as planned. This time, we hanged up the buntings around the road along faculties. This time was much quicker than expected. The whole process ended around 3.30pm. After returning all the unrelated buntings (convo's and others), we go to to have some ice kacang at Taman U. Oh ya, there were four of us, i.e. Razlan, Hock Meng, Jennie and me. We went there on Jennie's car. Here's the picture of it.

picture was taken using Jennie's handset

It cost RM2.50, quite expensive. According to Razlan, the price was just 2 Ringgit last time, but oh well, the petroleum's price is climbing high now, what to do? Leaving that aside, the ice kacang was quite ok. It had some chocolate on top of it and that made it quite yummy. We chatted again for a while before we went back to UTM. Forgot to mention that these ice kacang were all on Kak Nik. Thanks, Kak Nik.

(A Sad Day)

English Version (For my dearest readers)
>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>updated<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<

I was so down. After spending a whole day to sort out my feeling, I somehow managed to finished up my blog.

The thing was like this:

The night before yesterday, my friend and I went to watch our national badminton player, Lee Chong Wei's match. This was a must-see game for every badminton fans. We had been looking forward to this men's single final as it was a rare chance for our country to grab gold medal in the history of Olympic.

However, sadly, Lee Chong Wei's performance was so disappointing, he seemed to be daydreaming throughout this game while dreaming of the gold medal. He always looped the ball high. Lin Dan easily made full use of this golden opportunity to kill off Chong Wei in 2 straight game sets.

However, all Chong Wei's effort won't be in vain, he grabbed Malaysia's second silver medal in the history of Olympic. If not because of Lee Chong Wei, our beloved Malaysia would most probably ended up nothing to be brought back home. As for the other athletes, sadly they seemed to be just decorating this event. They brought us hopes but later disappointed us greatly.

Losing once does not mean that we are losing for the rest of our time. A Chinese proverb says it won't be too late to mend the fence after being attacked. If Lee Chong Wei could train harder, really look into his weaknesses and improves them, for sure after 4 years, the Olympic gold medal would not be a dream anymore.

"Police Keeping an Eye on Bloggers"

Since Raja Petra's case, police have been keeping an eye on bloggers nationwide. The even threaten bloggers not to write whatever they wish, especially the sensitive issues.

Today, New Strait Times published a news about this case. (16/8/2008)
"Police Keeping an Eye on Bloggers"

Menwhile, as a blogger, we should always be precautious while choosing every single word that we use, because sickness came in through our mouth, troubles came out from our mouth; once you have spoken, you could never take it back. Never let anger take control of your mind and rush things, it would be too late to regret later.
